How to Exfoliate for Your Skin Type

Summer is right around the corner–I THINK! who knows with this crazy weather–and most people I know are working to get their skin healthy and glowing. No one wants dry, itchy skin in shorts, right? And if you’ve been been hiding all winter in leggings, like I have been, I’m especially talking to you!

Here’s the thing though: Moisturizing is not the only key.

Whether we’re talking about face or body, your lotion is not nearly as effective if you don’t have an exfoliation product worked into your routine. Exfoliation is so important because it removes the dead skin cells from the top layer of skin. AWomensHealth.com tells us,

“As we age, the process of cell regeneration slows down. This means that the body is slower to shed skin cells and generate new ones. When old skin cells start to pile up on the surface of the skin, it can leave skin looking dull, rough, and dry. Furthermore, the build-up of dead skin cells can result in excess oil and clogged pores, leading to blemishes and acne.”

To keep your skin looking fresh, young, and healthy, exfoliation is a MUST. But, did you know, you can actually do more harm than good? When choosing a product, it is vital that you take your skin type into consideration! That, along with not over-doing it, will give you the most desired results.

So, incase you’re wondering, I’ve put together some information for you so that you can choose the best type of exfoliating product for your skin! It is important to note that I am not a doctor or skin professional; this information comes from my personal experiences and numerous informative articles I found while researching. Always ask your medical provider if you are nervous before trying out a new product or have concerns about an ingredient!

Which skin type are you?

  • Dry or Sensitive Skin: Many people with dry skin are afraid to exfoliate. While it’s true that you want to avoid over-doing it, a gentle chemical exfoliation once a week can be very helpful for your skin! When choosing a product for your face, look for one that contains fruit enzymes ovFF4047-2er a harsher scrub. My favorite facial exfoliator for dry skin? Pineapple Pick Me Up, which is loaded with fruit enzymes bromelain (pineapple) and papain (papaya), plus açaí and mangosteen extracts. For body, I recommend using a product such as a body polish or exfoliating body wash. Buff Around the Edges is my current favorite seasonal product for sensitive or dry skin. The scent makes me feel like I’m in a spa instead of my shower, and I love that it is infused with scrubby loofah and prickly pear cactus! Not crazy about that scent? Try a warmer (and extremely popular) scent with our You Apricaught Me body polish!
  • Oily Skin: One of the most common misconceptions for oily skin (face or body) is that you need to remove all the oil from your skin. This is not true! While you want to cleanse and exfoliate, you want to make sure not to strip your skin completely, leading to overproduction and a repeat of the same cycle. Balance is the key here. I recommend purposefully exfoliating 2-3 times a week to aid in blood circulation and the removal of dead skin. My product picks? For face, I highly recommend using Whole Lava Love: a volcanic ash scrub with charcoal powder, plant sugars, toning tea tree oil, and hydrating glycerin! This product is also 100% vegan, with no added dyes or scents. For body, my favorite is Posh’s Love the Dark body scrub, featuring a mineral-rich triple sea salt blend with charcoal to purify and shea butter/honey to moisturize!
  • ST3729-2

  • Normal Skin: Just like with oily skin, the key to a healthy/glowing complexion for dry skin is balance. I recommend using a exfoliator 1-2 times per week! This is my personal skin type, so these recommendations are what I currently use in my skincare routine. For face? SN4662-2Cackle Spackle is my go to mask–I adore the spearmint essential oil smell while I’m using it.  I also love that the kaolin clay and charcoal can hold up to 2,000 times their weight in impurities! With this mask, volcanic ash gently exfoliates dull, congested looking skin, while eucalyptus and blackberry leaf extract help tone. My must-have body exfoliator product is Perfectly Posh’s “snarky bar”. The snarky bar is unlike any other product I’ve ever found. It’s a body scrub and soap all in one convenient bar! Currently, I’m using Cactus Makes Perfect for Spring but I also really love the Healer snarky bar.

I hope this post was informative for you! Do you have specific questions? Would you like to sample a certain product before you buy? Please feel free to contact me. I’d love to help you!

With love,

Maggie Ricketts
